Below are some issues that we know can often be concerning to parents. There are also links to where to go for more information, how to get help and where to report abuse.

Protecting your child from sexually explicit, violent material and other inappropriate content

There are some great things you can see on the internet, but sometimes people with bad intentions can post pictures and things to read which might upset you. This might be racist, violent or pornographic or may include abusive images. You shouldn’t have to put up with this. If your child should come across any content that is inappropriate, worries them or makes them upset then they should be encouraged to come to you or a trusted adult and ‘flag’ the issue. If your child does experience inappropriate content online they should also report it, or ‘flag-it’ to the website it appears on. UKCCIS has developed an Internet safety ‘one stop shop’ with more information.

Some options to help prevent your child’s exposure to harmful content might include:

The internet-connected computer must be in a family room with the screen facing outward so you can see what’s going on

If your child accidentally goes to an unsuitable website they should tell you – you can delete it from the ‘history’ folder and add the address to the parental control filter list

It’s never OK to use abusive or threatening language in any online communication

Your child should take breaks from the computer every 30 minutes for health and safety reasons

Your child shouldn’t download unknown files from the internet without you agreeing – it’s best to never download unknown files at all

Reducing the risk of your child meeting strangers online

It can be hard for parents and carers to supervise what young people are doing online, including who they are talking with, but it is important to remember that not everyone or everything online is reliable or trustworthy. Although chatting to people online is popular, there are potential risks in communicating with people you don’t know, and unfortunately some children have been hurt when they have met up with friends they have met online. Childnet’s www.chatdanger.com website shares information on how to stay safe when chatting online. If you are concerned that a child or young person is being inappropriately contacted online by an adult you can report it to CEOP.

Stopping them sharing too much personal information

Sharing personal information online is very easy to do, and one of the attractions about social networking sites and sites promoting user generated content is that they give users a powerful voice to express their identity and opinions. However, it’s really important for all users to be mindful of what information they share in whatever they are doing online, whether using a chat facility or through their status updates and pictures for example. Personal information is not just limited to your email address, phone number and password, although this is all vital information to keep private, but also includes consideration of videos and photos posted online. By using the privacy settings that reputable sites offer, you can limit who can access your personal content. Childnet’s SMART rules offer an easy way for children to remember how to stay safe on the Internet.

How to help stop cyberbullying

If you’re concerned that your child is being bullied online, talk to them. It might be a difficult subject to broach but being open, honest and approachable will make it easier for them to discuss their feelings. Don’t get mad, but tell them you will do all you can to help them – don’t act alone or behind your child’s back, try to do the following with them.

If you discover your child is being bullied, the first thing to do is report it. You and/or your child should use the reporting mechanisms where possible on sites to flag the bullying content, so that it can be removed. Don’t respond or retaliate, but you can block users, and make sure you save any bullying messages, posts, pictures or videos you receive or see as evidence when you report them.

Ensure your child knows where they can go to get help and support if they are being bullied. Children, who often find it easier to talk about their problems to other youngsters, can get online support.

Understand what your child is doing online – but talk to them, don’t spy on them. Make sure they understand how to stay safe. Here are some tips for children:

What else to do if you are being cyberbullied or harassed online:

Report any cyberbullying, whether it’s targeted at you or not, and flag it up to the YouTube team. Block those users too.

Never respond or retaliate, as this can just make things worse. It might be difficult, but try to ignore the bullies.

Save and print out any bullying messages, posts, pictures or videos you receive or see.

Make a note of dates and times of bullying messages, along with any details you have about the sender’s ID.

Don’t pass on cyberbullying videos or messages – that makes you as bad as the cyberbully.

If you’re being bullied repeatedly, think about changing your user ID, nickname or profile.

Finally… if you think that someone else is being cyberbullied, don’t ignore it. If you see cyberbullying going on, report it and offer your support – tell them about CyberMentors.

Stay safe online using these tips for preventing cyberbullying:

Don’t post personal information online.

Don’t let anyone know your passwords.

Think carefully about what you say before you write or post anything online.

Respect other people’s views – just because you don’t agree with them, it doesn’t mean that you have to be rude or abusive.

Google yourself every now and again. It will show you what is online about you and what others can see – and you can make changes if you don’t like what you see!

Concerned mums, dads and guardians should check out Beatbullying’s website for more advice on how to deal with bullying.

Malware: What is it and how to make sure your children don’t install it

Viruses online are like viruses offline – not nice to catch and can cause big problems. Unfortunately viruses online are shared in much the same way as in the real world – the more people you contact and share things with, the greater the chance of catching something and passing it on. In the same way as we cant see the viruses that give us colds or other illnesses the same is usually the case with viruses that spread online. They often come in emails or pop-ups and they are likely to be passed on to your contacts and friends without you even realising it. Some affect the way your computer works while others are there to affect not only your time online but also those of your friends as you pass it on.

You can find more information on the UKCCIS one-stop shop.

This document gives Parents/Carers answers to questions about school closures. If your question is not answered here, please email schoolestate.enquiries@fife.gov.uk.

What kind of school closures are there?

Emergency – where the building cannot open as there is no hot water, the heating is not working or power failure.

Planned – Where the school building is closed for elections, industrial action or utility companies are doing planned maintenance work to gas, water or electric services in the area and all services are to be shut off. Schools are notified in advance of these closures and Headteachers will notify Parents/Carers of these closures.

Severe Weather – Headteachers will make the decision locally to close where severe weather prevents the school from opening.

How will I find out if my child’s school is closed?

Headteachers will make the decision as early as possible on the day of the closure. If you have registered for School Closure Alerts on Fife Direct, any closures will be automatically sent to your mobile phone and/or email account

You can sign up for text or email alerts through www.fifedirect.org.uk/Doitonline and look for school closure alert.

Text alerts and email issued via mobile network providers, may be delayed where there is high volume on mobile networks or the internet.

Schools may also have their own methods of contacting Parents/Carers, such as school bag mail and email/text through electronic communication systems.

When will I receive further email or text alerts from Fife Direct?

You will only receive text alerts when the status of a school changes. The first text/email will be sent when the school closes and a further text/email will be sent only once the school reopens. If a school remains closed over more than one day, there will be no further automatic alerts until the school reopens.

My child has recently moved school?

If your child moved to a new school or from a primary school to a high school in August 2011, you should amend the school details on your Fife Direct account to ensure you receive the correct school information. In the case of any other change, you should also make sure your details on Fife Direct are correct.

SEVERE WEATHER

What can Parents/Carers expect in cases of severe weather?

The Education Service aims to maintain service delivery during severe weather and minimise disruption to pupils and Parents/Carers.

Headteachers will close their school as early as possible, on the first morning of severe weather to allow text/email alerts to be issued as quickly as possible.

Education Service staff will prioritise the clearing of one pathway per school as an access route for all building users. This may not be your usual route into the school and it may not be the quickest route through the building.

Where there is heavy snowfall inFife, resources will be deployed to the worst hit areas and therefore the clearing of playgrounds and car parks will not be a priority until all schools are open.

It may not be possible to provide staff for all crossings during the worst of the weather. You should make arrangements to ensure the safety of your child to and from school.

What are the other main channels of communication during severe weather?

It can be helpful if you use some of these communication channels during periods of severe weather closures:

Online – www.fifedirect.org.uk/winter – all the news and information you’ll need is online – register for alerts at www.fifedirect.org.uk/alerts

Mobile phone – m.fifedirect.org.uk – from your mobile phone browser

Follow-us on facebook.com/fifecouncil and twitter.com/fifecouncil

Listen to Kingdom FM, Forth One andTay FM

Check DigiTV – Sky channel 539 press Red and Virgin interactive

Call us on 08451 55 11 99 (automated updates) – 08451 55 00 11 (faults and repairs) and 08451 55 00 99 (for out of hours emergency social work help and housing repairs)

My child is transported to school by bus, will the services still operate?

For those pupils who are transported to school by bus, please check www.fifedirect.org.uk, facebook or twitter for information which will be received from local bus companies.

Buses may not be able to enter housing schemes to collect pupils from designated bus stops and will only stop at the main road to pick up pupils. Pupils should therefore make their way to main roads and congregate at the nearest bus stop.

Pupils transported by taxis/mini-bus, will also possibly experience disruption during severe weather. In extreme weather conditions, the operators may not be able to provide transport from some or all the addresses on their route. Operators are expected, as far as possible, to make an attempt to contact these parents to advise them.

How can my child continue with their studies when the school is closed?

Pupils can access revision material on line as well as use the materials and past papers which may have already been provided by their teachers.

Queen Anne specific revision materials are available through Fronter.http://fronter.com/qahs using the same username and password your child uses to login to the school network

Many Higher and Advanced Higher courses are provided for via the internet through the Scholar program. Pupils studying most subjects can access their Scholar accounts on scholar.hw.ac.uk which provides tutorials, examination questions and E-assessments.

Pupils who have access to their Glow accounts will find a range of information that will be very helpful. Please make sure that your child retains their username and password for access.

Primary schools pupils can access a range of leaning opportunities on Radio Waves.

BBC, Channel 4 and Learning and Teaching Scotland websites provide very good materials for revision.

How can I hear if school events have been cancelled in cases of severe weather?

Where a school has closed on the morning of severe weather, it is likely that any evening events planned for that day will be cancelled. Updates will be provided on www.fifedirect.org.uk, Facebook and Twitter.

“Community use” schools will not open when a school has been closed during the day.

Please stay safe and warm: make sure that you allow extra time for any journeys made during severe weather and that pupils are dressed appropriately.

On 1st February 2012 Fife Council launched a new Parentwise survey. This is the first survey of its kind inFife and its purpose is to find out parental views on their child/children’s experiences in nursery or school. Many parents and staff working in education have helped to shape the survey questions so that they reflect the issues that are most important to parents.

AllFifenurseries and schools will use Parentwise as one of a range of ways of consulting with parents. The surveys will be confidential in that no names will be asked for but the collective responses will be used to identify school strengths and areas for development. This will inform school improvement planning and will also provide very valuable information about school experiences acrossFife. Nurseries and schools will share the results of the survey once they have received their individual survey report in June 2012. TheFifewide results will be published on the Fife Direct website.

All parents and carers are encouraged to complete the survey before the end of March 2012. Parentwise is an online survey that can be easily accessed from home, the public library, etc. If required the school can provide the opportunity for parents to complete the survey in school. Paper copies of the survey can also be made available on request.

The direct link to Parentwise is: www.fifedirect.org.uk/parentwise

Alongside the Parentwise survey, a very similar survey will be taking place in mainstream schools for pupils in P4-7 and a sample of S1-6. The Pupilwise survey will be conducted in schools in order to gather the views of pupils on their experiences in school. The results will be used and shared in the same way as the Parentwise survey. In the coming months the Pupilwise survey will be further developed to include younger children and children with additional support needs.
